A while back, I went to mass.

I tuned out for sometime, but the priest drew me back in when he began to talk about the birthing experience. What I vaguely remember is that he said that women experience labor pain because that was God’s way of punishing us. “Really?” I thought. How can this be? He is all love. Why on earth would He want this for us? He doesn’t want to hurt us at all.

In my memoir, I share a bit about being raised Catholic, and I now declare myself as Catholic by culture.

I first started thinking about my religion when I went to Spain back in 2007. I’d go into churches and they were quite lonely.  I asked a friend of mine, Rosario, about this and she replied, “Ni se les para una mosca.” This literally means that not even a fly stops there. But, she also made it clear that there a lot Spaniards who are Catholic and value catholicism in a cultural and social manner. 

I’m a believer.

 One of my favorite places in L.A. is the Lady of Angels Cathedral.  I am a big believer of saints, angels, the Virgin Mary, and of course, God; the Universe.  However, I am saying that I am not a devout Catholic. And, like the Dalai Lama, I don’t believe that you need a religion. Your heart, kindness, and compassion is all you need. I have never had more faith, nor have I been as kind and as compassionate as I am now that I have become less religious and more spiritual.

Hace un tiempo, fui a misa.

No estaba poniendo mucho atención por algún tiempo, pero el sacerdote me llamó la atención cuando comenzó a hablar acerca de la experiencia del parto. Me acuerdo que dijo, “Las mujeres experimentan el dolor del parto porque era la manera de que Dios las quiso castigar.”  “¿En serio?” Pensé. ¿Cómo puede ser esto? Él es amor. ¿Por qué demonios iba a querer esto para nosotras?

En mi memoria, comparto un poco de lo que ha sido ser criada en la fe católica y  ahora digo que soy católica por cultura.

Empecé a pensar más acerca de mi religión cuando fui a España en 2007. Iba a las iglesias y se me hacía extraño que estaban muy solas. Le pregunté a una amiga, Rosario, sobre esto y ella respondió: “No se les para ni una mosca.”  Pero, también aclaró que hay muchos españoles Católicos que valoran la religión de una forma cultural y social.

Soy creyente.

Uno de mis lugares favoritos en L.A. es la Catedral de Los Ángeles.  Creo en los santos, los ángeles, la Virgen María, y por supuesto en Dios: el Universo. Sin embargo, estoy diciendo que no soy devota o practicante.  Al igual que el Dalai Lama, no creo que se necesita una religión. Tu corazón, la bondad y la compasión es todo lo que se necesita. Nunca he tenido más fe, ni he sido tan amable y tan compasiva como lo soy ahora que soy menos religiosa y más espiritual.

Teacher By Default – Profesora por Defecto

Teacher by Default

When I was growing up, I dreamt and I dreamt big. As far as I can remember, I’ve
always loved to travel, and as a child, when grown ups would ask me, what do you want to be when you grow up? My response was always a pilot. This profession meant that I would fly really cool planes, and I’d travel!

As an adult, I didn’t become a pilot. I became a teacher- that is, by
default.

Why teacher by default? Webster’s Dictionary defines default as “a selection made usually automatically or without active consideration due to lack of a viable alternative.”  Somewhere between middle school and high school I stopped dreaming. College came around, and now my focus was on a career where I could make money and support myself.
Naturally, I did what a lot of people do.

I went to Long Beach State University (in Southern California). At the time, I was studying Spanish and Italian, and I thought teaching would be a viable profession for me. Not to mention, I had the pressure of choosing a major, and I decided to continue studying Spanish. So, I chose Spanish as my major and becoming a high school Spanish teacher seemed like my ideal job. While my plan was to get my master’s degree in Spanish and teach high school. Life had others plans for me as I became an elementary school teacher at the age of 23.

It is now 2007, and I’m in the middle of a divorce. Exhausted and burnt-out, I took time for myself from teaching. I’d thought it’d be only a year, and it turned to be about five years. During this break, I traveled; I went to school in Spain; I’d go back to school for a master’s degree in linguistics; I substituted; and, I began to write my memoir. In other words, I nurtured my soul.

After five years, I once again had my own class. 

My students were now adults, and I taught English as a Second Language (ESL). It was a wonderful opportunity, and I loved it.

And after a few months with my adult students, I started teaching high school.

Teaching was the profession that I chose, and I have done it with all the love in the world. As a teacher, my intentions were to help others and to inspire them. This past May, I received the most endearing letters from two students, and this was all I ever wanted as a teacher. I am grateful for the opportunity, and the experiences that I’ve had in this profession.

I feel the time has come to take a different direction in my life.

My childhood dream was to be a pilot. Now, my dreams are taking that child-like quality again, and I couldn’t be more appreciative. What will manifest from these dreams of mine? I know for sure that it will involve helping others through speaking and writing. For one, I have started English Pals. As always, thank you for reading.

Cuando era pequeña, soñaba y soñaba en grande. Siempre me ha encantado viajar y me acuerdo que cuando era niña me preguntaban, “¿qué quieres ser cuando seas grande? Siempre les contestaba que quería ser piloto. ¡Esto significaba que iba a volar aviones
padrísimos y viajaría, también!

No me convertí en un piloto. Estudié para ser maestra- por defecto.

¿Por qué profesora por defecto? Wikilengua define por defecto como “Dicho de seleccionar una opción: Automáticamente si no se elige otra.” No sé el momento preciso cuando paré de soñar, pero sucedió cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria o preparatoria.Obviamente, hice lo que hace mucha gente.

Fui a la universidad y me enfoqué en escoger una carrera para ganar dinero y mantenerme. Estudié en California State University, Long Beach (Universidad Estatal de California, Long Beach) en el sur de California. En aquel tiempo, estudiaba español
e italiano y creía que el ser profesora sería una profesión viable para mi. Además,
tenía la presión de elegir que estudiar y decidí por seguir estudiando español. Pensé que mi trabajo ideal sería ser maestra de español. Mi plan era de dar clases en español en una preparatoria, pero el destino tenía otros planes para mi y me convertí en maestra de escuela primaria a los 23 años.

Ahora es 2007 y estoy por divorciarme. Cansada agotada de mi trabajo, decidí parar de trabajar por un tiempo y tomar un descanso.  Pensé que solamente iba a ser por un año, pero fueron 5 años. Durante este tiempo, viajé, estudié en España, hice mi maestría en lingüística, trabajé como profesor sustituto y empecé a escribir mi memoria. En otras palabras, alimenté mi alma.
Después de cinco años tuve mi propia clase de
nuevo. 

Ahora mis alumnos no eran niños sino adultos. Di clases de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESL) y me
encantó.

Solamente trabajé con adultos unos meses y luego empecé a dar clases en una preparatoria. 
Elegí la enseñanza como mi profesión y lo he hecho con todo el cariño del mundo. Como profesora, mis intenciones fueron de inspirar y ayudar a mis alumnos. En mayo, recibí dos cartas hermosas de ellos. Como profesora,  es todo lo que he querido. Estoy agradecida por la oportunidad y la experiencia que he tenido en esta profesión.

Siento que ya he llegado el momento de tomar otra dirección en mi
vida.

Mi sueño de niña era de ser pilota. Ahora, sueño de nuevo como niña y lo aprecio todo. ¿Qué se manifestará de mis sueños? Por ahora ya empecé mi primer negocio: English Pals. Sé con certeza que va a involucrar a ayudar a los demás mediante el habla y la escritura.

One Baby Step At A Time – Un Pasito A La Vez

One Baby Step At A Time

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I could write a book.” 

This was me about three years ago. That is the time I started writing my memoir. Was it a dream? Yes. It still is.  As I  have said before, being a published writer and speaker is a dream of mine. What I have learned about pursuing your dreams is to be patient and take baby steps.

As I approach the last few months of the completion of the book, I am reminded of where I began and all that I have done to manifest this in my life. It was May 2010 when I found myself  at the library at Long Beach State, and I started to write this book. I should have been studying for my comps exam, but my intuition told me to write, and  I did. As I wrote the first three pages of the book, I jumped to the end of the book. And just like that I’d written the end of my memoir.

As with anything I have done, it all started with taking baby steps towards my goal. In one of the last posts, Nature, Life, and Writing – What Do They Have In Common?, I talk about patience.

What are the baby steps have I taken towards my dream?

1.  Believe in yourself.  Not only must you believe in your dream, but in yourself as well.

2. Start today. The time to begin is now.

3.  Do it every day. Whether it be to write, or to practice the piano every day, or to lose weight. You’d be amazed at how much you can accomplish by doing a little every day.

3. Build a platform. If your dream requires that you get noticed,  start a blog, get a Facebook page, Twitter, etc. A great book on this is Michael Hyatt’s Platform: Get Noticed In A Noisy World.

4. Be grateful. Take time out from your day to be grateful for all that you have accomplished and with those that have helped you.

5. Be patient.  And above all,  be patient with yourself and with your passion.

Finally, whether you want to be a published writer or you are wanting to lose weight, it is all within your reach!

Un Pasito A La Vez

“Jamas pensé que podría escribir un libro.”

Esto fue algo que dije hace tres años. Fue cuando empecé a escribir mi memoria. Era un sueño? Si, y todavía lo es. Como he dicho muchas veces, ser una escritora publicada y oradora es un sueño mio. Lo que he aprendido de hacer un sueño realidad es de ser paciente y tomar pasitos.

*Pasos de bebé para nuestros grandes sueños

En estos últimos meses que me faltan por terminar mi libro, me acuerdo donde empecé y todo lo que he hecho para manifestar esto en mi vida. Un día de mayo 2010, estaba yo en la biblioteca de la Universad de Long Beach y fue allí donde empecé a escribir mi libro. Debería haber estado estudiando para mis exámenes, pero algo dentro de mi me dijo que empezará el libro y lo empecé. Tenía como unas tres páginas escritas y de repente me salté hasta el final del libro. Y así fue como escribí el final de mi memoria.

Con todo lo que he hecho, he empezado con tomar pasitos hacia mi meta. En una de mis últimas entradas, La Naturaleza, La Vida y La Escritura – ¿Qué Tienen En Común?, hablo sobre la paciencia.

¿Y qué pasitos he tomada yo para hacer mis sueños realidad?

1. Cree en ti mismo. No solamente tienes que creer en tu sueño, sino en ti también.

2. Empieza hoy. El tiempo para empezar es ahora.  Hazlo todos los días. Te sorprenderás de lo mucho que puedes lograr con solo hacer aquello un poco todos los días.

3. Haz una plataforma virtual. Si tu sueño requiere a darte a conocer, puedes empezar con un blog, y después  una página de Facebook, Twitter, etc. Un  libro que me ayudó mucho con este tema es el de Michael Hyatt – Plataforma: Hazte oír en un mundo ruidoso.

4. Ser agradecido. Tomo tiempo de tu día para estar agradecido con todo lo que has logrado y con las personas que te han ayudado.

5. Ser Paciente. Sobretodo, se paciente contigo mismo y con tu pasión.

Por último, si quieres ser un escritor publicado o estás interesado en perder peso. ¡Tu meta está a tu alcance!

As I continue to work on English Pals, I’d like to share more on what it will look like.

English Pals will be…

Casual, Fun Conversation -When I studied in Italy in 1997, one of my homework assignments was to go to a piazza and talk to local Italians. That was so much fun, and I learned so much that summer!  I intend that English with Liz will be much like this.  Picture us meeting up for coffee and just speaking in English.

Comfortable Environment – I know you don’t know me personally, but I consider myself to be a fun person to hang out with.  Also, maybe we won’t be meeting up for coffee, but you will likely have these sessions from the privacy of your comfortable home as I will.  

3 Topics Chosen or Freestyle – You’ll have the choice to choose 3 topics that you would like to talk about during our session. Or, you have the option of doing it Freestyle! What do I mean by freestyle? By this I mean that we can talk about anything that comes up. There’s a possibility that I may not know about the topic , but in that case, I’ll do my best to contribute to the discussion or you’ll be the expert for that topic, and I will learn from you 🙂

With all this said, please don’t expect English Pals to be a typical class session.

While I will help you with  pronunciation, and other English language concepts like making requests, idiomatic expressions, and any questions you may have on English, I will not be giving any homework assignments, nor will I give any  assessments (exams).  These sessions will also not be a regular conversation lesson. My intention is to help you improve your English through a fun and comfortable exchange of speaking and listening.

English Pals será…

Una Conversación Informal y Divertida -Cuando estudié en Italia en 1997, una de mis tareas era de ir a una piazza y hablar con italianos. ¡Fue muy divertido y aprendí mucho ese verano! Así como mi experiencia en Italia, podríamos imaginarnos tomándonos un cafecito en un ambiente informal mientras hablamos en ingles.

Un Ambiente Confortable – Sé que ustedes no me conocen, pero me considero ser una persona amable y divertida  con el que uno se lo podía pasar bien. Además, sé que no nos reuniremos en un café, pero probablemente tendrán estas sesiones en la privacidad de sus propios hogares así como yo.   

3  Temas o “Freestyle” – Podrán escoger 3 temas que les interese de lo que quisieran hablar durante nuestra sesión. O tendrán la opción de hacerlo Freestyle (estilo libre) ¿Qué significa freestyle? Freestyle significa estilo libre. Vamos a poder hablar de cualquier cosa que se nos venga a la mente. Es posible que quizás no sepa el tema, pero en ese caso, haré todo lo posible para contribuir a nuestra conversación y serás mi profesor/a de ese tema. 🙂

Dicho esto, por favor no esperen que  English Pals sea una clase típica. 

Les ayudaré con vocabulario y pronunciación, gramática, y otros conceptos del idioma como hacer peticiones en inglés, expresiones idiomáticas y cualquiera pregunta que tengan sobre el idioma Sin embargo, no les daré tarea, ni les daré exámenes o pruebas. Podré hacer sugerencias, si quieren. Mi intención es de ayudarles mejorar su inglés en un ambiente relajado, divertido y cómodo. Y no será una clase de conversación.

English Sessions through Facetime- Sesiones de inglés por Facetime

English Sessions through FaceTime

Recently, I was asked about how the English Pals classes would be taught through FaceTime.

I’ve called these FaceTime sessions English classes in other posts. However, I’d like to make it clear that it will not be like a regular English class. In other words, I will not teach a regular lesson, like the present tense verbs in English, and teach you only about this.

Instead, what I will do is spend about an hour session talking with you in English.

I intend to help you improve your English speaking skills through a fun and comfortable chat. Of course, I would answer any specific questions you may have about the language, vocabulary, and I will help you with pronunciation practice and correct you, if you’d like, as well.

The FUN Conversation Sessions via FaceTime

If you are familiar with FaceTime, then you know that you can see each other and speak to each other through your  iPhone, and other Mac technological devices. We will agree on a day and time, and we will chat for approximately and hour!

By the way, did I mention that it will be fun? 🙂

Hace poco alguien me preguntó ¿Cómo se impartarán las clases por Face Time?

Les he llamado a estas sesiones clases de inglés. Sin embargo, quiero aclarar que no serán típicas clases de inglés. Es decir, no les voy a dar una lección de inglés (como una lección del presente de los verbos del inglés).

En cambio, platicaré con ustedes por una hora en inglés.

• As someone who studied Italian, and taught Spanish and English, I am aware of some of the obstacles present in acquiring foreign language. I also know that oral practice is essential to learning the language and the confidence you build as you become more fluent. 
• My philosophy is that it’s never too late to start and anyone can learn another language. I’ve never seen age or any background as a deterrent to accomplish anything in life. I’d often shared with my students that the word impossible is not in my vocabulary.

• Mi filosofía es que nunca es muy tarde y cualquier persona puede aprender otro idioma. Creo que la edad o antecendentes personales no necesitan ser  un impedimento para lograr lo que deseas en la vida. Seguido les decía a mis alumnos que la palabra imposible no era parte de mi léxico.
• Finalmente, creo que el primer paso en lo que hagas es difícil. Cuando se estudia un idioma, una de las partes que temen más del aprendizaje es la práctica oral. Pero, una vez que lo hayas hecho,  cosecharás las recompensas.

Some Advantages of Speaking English – Algunas Ventajas de Hablar Inglés

Some Advantages of Speaking English

Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend and coworker of mine, and she told me that she still had difficulty with the past tense in English. She then asked me if I could help learn it. “Of course”, I said. I thought how fortunate she is for having learned English and what an advantage it is to speak English.

As I think more about , it got me thinking about some of the advantages of speaking English.

1. English as a Global Language. There is a New York Times article from 2007 titled Across cultures, English is the word that declares English as a global language. David Crystal, author of “English as a Global Language” states, “This is the first time we actually have a language spoken genuinely globally by every country in the world,” he said. I have been to Europe twice, and aside from Spanish and some Italian, I was grateful I was that many Europeans spoke English as I was able to communicate with them.
2. Job  Opportunities – When I taught ESL classes, many of my students’ goal for learning English to get a better paying job. If you learn English, you’d have a better opportunity to  think of my co-worker and how fortunate she is to have learned English for many reasons and one of them being that she has a job that pays her well because she speaks English.
3. Cognitive Benefits –A study published in Cerebrum – The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual spoke of benefits of knowing two or more languages.  For example, “bilingual children as young as seven months can better adjust to environmental changes, while bilingual seniors can experience less cognitive decline.”

There are many more advantages than the ones that I have listed here. What other advantages do you know of as a result of speaking English or another language?

Algunas Ventajas de Hablar Inglés

Ayer hablé con una amiga y compañera  del trabajo y me dijo que aún tenía dificultad con el tiempo pasado en inglés. “¿Me puedes ayudar con esto?”, me preguntó.  “Por supuesto” le dije. Pensé que afortunada era que aprendió inglés y que ventaja que lo habla también.

Me hizo pensar más en algunas de las ventajas de hablar inglés y de English Pals.

1. El inglés es un idioma universal – En un artículo publicado por el diario estadounidenseThe New York Times declara el inglés como un lenguaje global.David Crystal, autor de English as a Global Language, dice “Esta es la primera vez que tenemos un idioma hablado mundialmente por cada país en el mundo.” He ido a Europa dos veces y aparte de hablar español y un poco de italiano, estaba agradecida que había una gran cantidad de europeos que hablaban inglés.
2. Oportunidades de trabajo – Cuando enseñé inglés, la meta de la mayoría de mis alumnos era de aprenderlo  para conseguir un trabajo bien pagado. Si aprenden inglés tendrán una mejor oportunidad de conseguir un empleo mejor pagado o con un puesto más elevado.
3. Beneficios Cognitivos – Un estudio publicado en Cerebrum – The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual, o Los beneficios cognitivos de ser bilingües habla de los beneficios de saber dos o más idiomas, habla de “niños bilingües de tan sólo 7 meses de edad se adaptan mejos a los cambios ambientales, mientras las personas mayores bilingües pueden tener menos deterioro cognitivo.”

Hay muchas más ventajas de hablar inglés que las que mencioné aquí. ¿Qué otras ventajas pueden haber como resultado de hablar inglés o un segundo idioma?

English Pals is Born – Nace English Pals

English Pals is Born

Last December I got the idea to begin a business.  Like a mental sticky note, it came to me. Then,  immediately after I made my decision to leave teaching, I got another idea that I wanted to help others achieve their dreams. I put these two together, and I knew I had something. My plans had to be put in action.

I’m calling it English Pals.

English Pals is my new business where I’ll be helping others develop and improve their English speaking skills through fun conversations through Facetime. Before going into the details of it, let me backtrack a bit. Some of the best and memorable times I had in teaching were when my students talked in class whether they were learning English or Spanish. I encouraged speaking in my classroom because they were learning from each other, they were retaining the content better through speaking about it, and they orally practiced the language.

One experience that stands out in my teaching career is The Conversation Club.

The Conversation Club is a club I started when I taught my adult ESL (English as Second Language) students.  Thirty minutes before the morning and afternoon classes began, I would have students join me to practice their speaking English with each other and with me. It was rewarding to have been able to see my students grow academically and personally. I absolutely loved it!

Now, my desire for helping others this way has come up again.

I know that I served in teaching and helped my former students as much as I possible could.  English Pals is an exciting opportunity to serve and help others improve their English speaking skills.  This is an opportunity where I can help you fulfill your dreams to master English in order to get that job, take a trip you’ve dreamt of, to talk to your in-laws, to challenge yourself, or perhaps you are a nerd like me and just L-O-V-E the written and spoken word. The possibilities and advantages of knowing and speaking a second language are endless!

Nace English Pals (Los Amigos del Inglés)

En diciembre del año pasado, escribí sobre un idea de montar un negocio. Fue una idea que me vino una noche mientras escribía e inmediatamente cuando decidí resignarme de mi trabajo se me vino otra idea. Esta vez era de ayudar a otros realizar sus sueños. Sabía que ambas ideas apuntaban a una sola cosa. Era tiempo de poner mi plan en marcha.

Se llama English Pals (Los Amigos del Inglés)

English Pals es mi nuevo negocio donde ayudaré a otros a desarrollar y mejorar sus habilidades de habla en inglés a través de Facetime. Antes de hablar de los detalles del negocio, permítanme hablar sobre algunos de los mejores tiempos memorables que tuve como profesora y era cuando mis alumnos hablaban el idioma que estaban aprendiendo- ya sea inglés o español. Los animaba a hablar en mi clase porque estaban aprendiendo el uno del otro, estaban reteniendo lo aprendido y estaban practicando oralmente el idioma que aprendían.

Una experiencia que se destaca en mi carrera como profesora fue  The Conversation Club.

The Conversation Club (El Club de Conversación) es un club que empecé cuando daba clases de ESL (Inglés como Segundo Idioma).  Llegaba media antes de que empezarán mis clases por la mañana y tarde, escribía un tema y preguntas sobre el tema.  Los alumnos practicaban el inglés con sus compañeros y conmigo.  Fue gratificante haber podido ayudarles académicamente como personalmente. ¡Me encantó!

Ahora, mi deseo de ayudar a otros surge de nuevo. 

Sé que les ayudé a mis alumnos lo más que pude. English Pals es una nueva oportunidad para servir y ayudar a otros mejorar sus habilidades para hablar y entender inglés. De este modo, les podré ayudar para que realizan sus sueños de dominar el inglés para conseguir un trabajo, hacer un viaje de sus sueños, hablar con sus suegros,  para desafiarte a ti mismo, o quizás eres un cerebrito como yo y te encantan las palabras. ¡Las posibilidades y ventajas de  hablar un segundo idioma son infinitas!
