Virgin of Guadalupe Feast Day
In honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe feast day, I thought I’d share a bit on Mexico’s patron saint.

In December 1531, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in Tepeyac Hill, which is now a suburb Mexico City. The Virgin told Juan Diego to have a church built there where the apparition took place. He told the bishop, but he didn’t believe him. The Virgin reappeared, and Juan Diego told her what happened. She ordered him to collect roses in his tilmátli, a kind of cloak. When he reached the bishop, he opened his cloak, and the image of the Virgin appeared on it.
December 12th is a national holiday in Mexico, and the main celebration takes place in the the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The video below shows artists singing Las Mañanitas (a version of Happy Birthday) to the Virgin in honor of this day.

Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe
En honor del día de la Virgen de Guadalupe, quiero compartir con ustedes un poco de la Virgen de Guadalupe, Patrona de México.

En Diciembre 1531, la Virgen de Guadalupe se le apareció a Juan Diego en el Tepeyec en la ciudad de México. La Virgen le dijo a Juan Diego que construyera un templo donde la aparición se manifestó. Él habló con el obispo sobre lo que le había pasado, pero no le creyó. La Virgen se le apareció otra vez y Juan Diego le explicó lo que sucedió. Lo ordenó que cortara rosas y que se las llevara al obispo. Juan Diego colectó las flores en su tilmátli y cuando llegó con el obispo, desplegó su manta y la imagen de la Virgen se imprimió en su tilmátli. Esta manta se encuentra en la Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México.
Cada 12 de diciembre hay una celebración en la Basílica de Nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México donde cienes de miles de personas se reunan para esta grande festividad. En este video verán parte de la celebración en la Basílica- cantándole Las Mañanitas a la Virgen .
